Step 01

Draw the finished deck surface

Establish shape, board direction, borders, stairs, and interruptions before counting boards.

Sketch the deck as finished surfaces, not only one outside rectangle. Mark house walls, openings, posts, stairs, hatches, curves, picture-frame borders, breaker boards, and any change in board direction. Split irregular shapes into measurable zones.

Board direction affects row count and may affect framing. Structural layout, footings, loads, guards, stairs, and code compliance require project-specific professional design or verification; the surface sketch does not replace that work.

Step 02

Choose the real board dimensions

Base the row calculation on installed width, gap, and available stock lengths.

Use actual face width rather than the nominal product name, then add the installation gap required for the selected material and conditions. List the stock lengths that the supplier actually carries and note whether the product has directional grain, varied boards, or special fastening rules.

A full-length layout can reduce seams but may increase transport difficulty or end waste. A staggered layout needs supported joints and a deliberate cut sequence. Keep these choices visible before converting total linear footage to a board count.

Step 03

Calculate rows, linear footage, and full boards

Use the calculator result as the start of a length-by-length cut plan.

Calculate field-board rows from the deck width, actual board face, and gap. Multiply the rows by the run length and add a documented allowance for cuts and defects. Then test available board lengths rather than assuming one length always produces the lowest order cost.

Record picture-frame borders, breaker boards, fascia, and stair treads separately because their direction and cut pattern differ from the field. Reusable offcuts can reduce the order only when the cut plan shows where they will be used.

Step 04

Build the complete material scope

Keep surface decking distinct from the supporting assembly and safety components.

Create separate sections for framing lumber, beams, posts, footings, connectors, flashing, fasteners or hidden clips, fascia, stairs, railing, gates, finishes, and drainage details. Each depends on product requirements, structural design, local conditions, and code.

Do not use a surface-board waste factor to cover structural items. Obtain a verified framing and footing design before treating the deck budget as purchase-ready.

Step 05

Compare options on equal scope

Evaluate material alternatives using full order cost and long-term project requirements.

Compare wood, composite, or other selected products using actual board counts, fastening systems, trim pieces, delivery, labor, finish requirements, and available lengths. Do not compare one product's board-only shelf price with another product's installed system price.

Update current prices immediately before purchase, confirm lead times and returns, and have the structural design and final takeoff reviewed. Save the dated option table so a later product change does not inherit incompatible spacing, fastening, or cost assumptions.
