Map the roof before calculating
Create a measured plane list instead of using living area as a shortcut.
Sketch every roof plane and label its horizontal dimensions, pitch, and overhang. Dormers, porches, additions, and intersecting roofs should remain separate until their surface areas have been checked. A building footprint can be useful for a rough first pass, but it does not describe all installed roof surfaces.
Roof access is hazardous. Use drawings, safe ground-based measurements, a contractor takeoff, or another appropriate method when direct measurement would create risk. The goal is a reviewable geometry record, not a false level of precision.
Calculate field-shingle coverage
Convert sloped surface area into the exact product's purchasable bundles.
Calculate or verify the sloped area for each plane, add the areas, and convert the total to roofing squares for review. Choose a waste allowance that reflects the geometry and cutting pattern rather than applying one percentage to every roof.
Use the coverage printed for the selected shingle bundle. Do not assume every product uses three bundles per square. Divide the waste-adjusted field area by that coverage and round up to full bundles, then record the extra coverage created by rounding.
Build the roof-system list
Keep linear accessories and assembly components out of the field-shingle allowance.
Measure eaves and rakes for starter coverage, hips and ridges for cap coverage, and valleys or wall intersections for the applicable system details. Underlayment, leak barrier, flashing, ventilation, fasteners, sealants, and deck protection have different units and manufacturer rules.
Treat each component as its own line. Inflating the shingle waste percentage does not create the correct ridge, starter, flashing, or ventilation order and makes the final estimate difficult to audit.
Separate known scope from uncertainty
Price tear-off, disposal, delivery, and concealed conditions honestly.
Record the known number of existing layers, access constraints, delivery location, disposal plan, and any visible deck damage. Sheathing replacement discovered after tear-off is a cost uncertainty, not shingle waste. Keep a clearly labeled contingency or unit-price allowance for that unknown work.
Labor, permits, staging, fall protection, and local code requirements cannot be derived from bundle count. Obtain qualified project-specific advice and compare written scopes line by line.
Run the pre-order review
Resolve product, quantity, handling, and return questions before money is committed.
Take the plane sketch, bundle calculation, accessory list, and project scope to the supplier or roofer. Confirm product availability, matching lots, delivery limitations, rooftop loading, package returns, and storage requirements.
Date the estimate and save the product documents used. A final professional takeoff may differ from this planning worksheet; update the worksheet so the reason for each difference remains visible.
